Health, Balance, Renewal, and Harmony

Welcome to Clinical Reflexology

Clinical reflexology is a holistic, non-invasive treatment that works alongside and complements conventional healthcare, in which the clinical reflexologist is trained to work safely on individuals with health problems and issues.

As a science based on the physiological and neurological study the principle of reflexology is that areas, or reflexes, on the feet and hands relate to the internal organs and parts of the body. Using a specialised system of touch and working on specific reflexes can influence other areas of the body, whilst a full treatment, is in effect, a full body massage. The intensity of pressure applied during a treatment may be significant depending on which types of sensory nerve receptors in the skin are stimulated. When the skin is touched, the cells emit an electrical current and the sensory nerves transmit this to the brain, from where it is relayed to local muscles for a response. When specialist massage techniques are used on these reflex areas and involuntary response occurs in the organs, glands, and body parts, causing physiological changes to take place as the body's own healing potential is enhanced.

Reflexology works on many levels and is a deeply relaxing treatment that both enhances and soothes all systems of the body. A powerful antidote to stress, it can help reduce nerve tension by generating deep relaxation, allowing the body to rest and repair itself. It is a powerful system of healthcare, useful for achieving and maintaining good health, whilst enhancing wellbeing, as well as for relieving symptoms or causes of illness and dis-ease.

Why Reflexology for Menopause and Wellbeing?

Reflexology can be very beneficial and supportive throughout the perimenopause and menopause both on a physical and emotional level. Dealing with many of the symptoms such as hot flushes, mood swings, disturbed sleep, joint aches and pains, and fatigue can create havoc, having an effect not only on you but also your relationships, family, work and daily life.

By helping ease some of the symptoms of perimenopause/menopause through working on a series of reflexes, such as the endocrine system and nervous system reflexes, reflexology can assist in regulating glandular and hormonal function, help reduce vasomotor symptoms (hot flushes and night sweats), help calm the peripheral nervous system, aid relief from stress and anxiety, and restore balance.

Reflexology is not just a foot treatment, but it can be just as effectively employed using the hands through hand reflexology, with this being valuable as a self-help tool/technique when you wish to support yourself at home, and being shown the appropriate hand reflex areas by a qualified practitioner may be something you would like to consider.

An example of some of the perimenopausal/menopausal symptoms reflexology can potentially assist with:

  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia - disturbed sleep
  • Hot flushes
  • Mood swings
  • Muscle aches and joint pain
  • Night sweats

There are also a variety of aromatherapy essential oils which can also be very beneficial for perimenopausal/menopausal symptoms, and which I use within the reflex treatments I provide. Essential oils have many beneficial qualities, and provide both physiological and psychological effects on the body and mind, with oils such as Rose, Geranium, Bergamot, Clary Sage, Roman Chamomile, having relaxing and restorative properties. When using the most appropriate essential oil for a client within a reflex treatment, this adds to the benefits they will gain and experience for overall wellbeing.

Reflexology Lymphatic Drainage

(RLD)

RLD is a technique that isolates and systematically stimulates the lymphatic reflexes of the feet, using a problem specific sequence. Lymphoedema is a chronic (long-term) condition that causes swelling in the body's tissues, usually in the arms and legs. It develops when there is a problem with the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and glands spread throughout the body, whose main functions include helping fight infection and the draining of excess fluid from the tissues.

Secondary lymphoedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system or problems with the movement and drainage of fluid within the system/tissues. This may be a result of an infection, injury, cancer treatments, inflammation of the limb, or lack of limb movement.

The RLD treatment is adapted according to the site of secondary lymphoedema, and may also be used when treating and supporting other conditions including: Perimenopause/menopause, MS, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, other immune-related conditions, Parkinson's Disease, and generalised aches and pains.

The Potential Benefits of Clinical Reflexology

Balance/Health

Reflexology is a wonderful way of maintaining your body's healthy balance (homeostasis) and general wellbeing, reducing stresses and tensions that come with busy lifestyles and giving us a space to reflect on the mind as well as the body.

It can induce a deep state of relaxation, which improves the effectiveness of the treatment. Relaxing helps relieve tension and aids circulation, increasing the flow of nutrients, oxygen and energy to all parts of the body, and balances the nervous system.
